I’ve seen the phrase “game changer” a lot this year. Like the word douchebag, its usage has been steadily increasing. It’s been most prevalent in marketing copy, with companies calling every new product and service they release a “Game Changer!” I looked at stats from Google News, and it (unscientifically) confirmed my observations.
Calling your own product or service a game changer is like publishing a video on YouTube and telling the world that it’s going viral. Game changing and memes are not something you have control over. They simply happen, and it becomes obvious to everyone if your product or service ends up changing the game.
I’m hoping to see less game changing marketing hype in 2011.
Update: Is it a game changer? drives my point home.
