Perhaps the best solution for many is to combine the intimacy, privacy and directness of email with the rich media capabilities of Facebook. Consider checking out WHSPER. Just launched into beta - the site has has found a way to make sharing more personal and private, something that both Facebook and Twitter, both companies that generate revenue from selling data to search engines, do not have an appreciation for.

Bill, spell my name correctly, and yes, I'm grumpy :P

Agreed, Twitter can be cool during events and conferences.

John,

Has it occurred to you that you might be a grumpy old man who's past his technological prime? ;) Speaking as one myself, I believe I can recognize the signs.

I agree with only 1 of you anti-twitter points: lack of accountability. Besides that, I find the idea of microblogging pretty mind-blowing especially during national or international events. As twitter becomes more prolific, I think there is extreme value in the ability to gauge the world temperature through the various comments. The frequency of posts and vocabulary used will one day allow us to quickly spot exciting or menacing trends throughout the world. I think that the pros far outweigh the cons.

Regarding FB, I continually find myself trying to use it less, because I have this impression that the data is so closed. Instead, I use twitter, flickr and my own blog. Maybe that will be addressed at some point, but for now, it seems that the accountability of Facebook carries with it a less open API.
